Day 1
HELSINKI
Arrival in Helsinki according to your own itinerary.
Helsinki, the capital of Finland since 1917, was founded by King Gustav Vasa of Sweden in 1550. Helsinki is a compact and beautiful city that is ideal for seeing on foot. The city also has an excellent public transportation system for getting around and visiting outlying areas.
The city is beautifully seated on the sea and has a unique architecture.
Art enthusiasts will love Helsinki and its large number of high quality museums and galleries. Helsinki is also an important city for design and architecture.
The Cathedral of Helsinki is a must and is perhaps the most photographed and recognizable building in Finland
In the afternoon why not go shopping or explore some of the sights in Helsinki. We recommend a stroll in the Esplanade Park situated in the heart of Helsinki. The Esplanade is a protected area that is culturally and historically important. The park serves as a promenade for tourists and a place to relax for city people.
Day 2
HELSINKI
Breakfast at the hotel.
Today you will join an Audio City Tour which is a popular sightseeing tour with recorded commentary and sound effects, giving you a wide variety of information about Helsinki. Departure from Esplanade Park. The many sights include the Senate Square, Uspenski Cathedral, the Parliament Building and the Olympic Stadium. Stops are also made at the Sibelius Monument and, when possible, at the Temppeliaukio Church (service included).
A visit to the Seurasaari Open Air Museum is recommended (service not included). The open-air museum of Seurasaari is located on a beautiful green island just a few kilometers from the heart of Helsinki. All the different provinces of Finland are represented in the well preserved old buildings and they give an overall view of Finnish countryside life from the 18th to the 20th century. At present, there are 87 separate buildings at Seurasaari Museum.
Day 3
HELSINKI
Breakfast at the hotel.
Very recommended is a visit at Suomenlinna, a major monument of military architecture. The construction of the sea fortress on the islands just off Helsinki in the middle of the 18th century was the most extensive building project during Swedish rule. When it was complete, its military shipyard was one of the biggest dry docks in the world and centers of know-how at that time. At the end of Swedish rule the fortress was being compared with the maritime fortifications at Gibraltar.
The 250-year-old fortress, which has been preserved intact because of its military use, is today part of the world heritage. In 1991 it was included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
Suomenlinna is one of Finland’s most popular tourist attractions. At the same time it is a suburb of Helsinki, with 850 people living in the renovated ramparts and barracks.
To get to Suomenlinna you have to take a short ferry-crossing from the market square (entrance and ferry-crossing not included).
